Walking holidays in Portsmouth

Walking holidays in Portsmouth can be so much fun. Walking in Portsmouth and Southsea is a delightful way to experience the charm, history, and natural beauty of this brilliant seaside town on England’s southern coast. Most of our properties come with private parking, so you can ditch the car and enjoy the eclectic mix of Victorian architecture, expansive seafront, rich history, and lively community atmosphere.

On a leisurely stroll, visitors can explore fascinating landmarks, unwind in picturesque parks, and indulge in some of the area’s finest pubs and cafes. For holidays in Portsmouth, Southsea’s walkable landscape promises a pleasant journey filled with discoveries. For those who love longer walks, you can walk around the island. This is a 13.5-mile walk that takes in views of the Isle of Wight, Southsea Castle, Milton Common, Hillsea Lines and Alexandra Park.

If you want to hike further afield whilst on holiday in Portsmouth, we are just a short drive from the beautiful South Downs Way, which is also a wonderful place to hike.

Walking from Old Portsmouth to South Parade Pier

A brilliant starting point for a walk in Southsea is along the stunning seafront, which runs from Old Portsmouth in the west to Eastney in the east. With its broad promenade, the Southsea Esplanade provides beautiful views of the Solent, where you can see ferries, yachts, and even warships making their way to and from the busy Portsmouth Harbour. Walking along the seafront offers fresh air, with the sounds of crashing waves and the sight of seabirds overhead adding to the experience.

One of the main attractions along this route is South Parade Pier. This historic pier has been a Southsea landmark since the late 19th century and offers a nostalgic seaside experience with arcades, cafes, and a view of the sea. A leisurely stroll out onto the pier is perfect for viewing the coastline's panoramic views. Ryan Gosling was recently filming on the pier!

Canoe Lake and Southsea Model Village

Heading eastward, walkers will find Canoe Lake, a fun boating lake with swan-shaped pedaloes, making an ideal day out for those on family holidays in Portsmouth. The lake is home to swans, ducks, and other wildlife. Well-maintained gardens surround the lake, and there’s even a model boating area, making it a charming spot for a stroll or a family-friendly visit. In the warmer months, you can rent a pedalo or relax on one of the benches scattered around the area. Children especially enjoy feeding the swans and playing in the adjacent play park, which has a play area, a large sand pit, and a zip wire, and splash park in the summer months.

Near Canoe Lake is Southsea Model Village, a quaint and unique attraction that features miniature houses, castles, and even a tiny railway. Walking around the model village transports visitors to a different time, offering an unusual yet delightful break from the modern-day bustle. At Christmas and Halloween, there are often special fun events for all the family.

Southsea Common and Clarence Pier

For those who prefer open, grassy spaces, Southsea Common is an expansive green area that stretches along the coast. It’s perfect for a peaceful walk while enjoying views of the sea and passing ships. The Common is also home to several key landmarks, including the iconic Portsmouth Naval Memorial, dedicated to sailors who lost their lives during the two World Wars. The memorial adds a poignant touch to the walk, reminding visitors of Southsea’s deep naval heritage.

For families on holiday in Portsmouth, Southsea common also hosts a large skate park, tennis courts, cafes, The D-DAY Story Museum and another splash park in the summer months.

At the western edge of the Common is Clarence Pier, another traditional seaside amusement area with rides, arcades, and cafes. While it’s a little more lively than the rest of the Common, it’s a great place to stop for a quick coffee or snack before continuing your walk along the promenade.

Historic Southsea: Old Portsmouth and Southsea Castle

Southsea also offers a wealth of historical sites to explore on foot. Walking west towards Old Portsmouth, you’ll find narrow, cobbled streets and charming old buildings that reflect the town’s maritime history. Old Portsmouth is a treasure trove of historical architecture and provides a more peaceful atmosphere than Southsea's bustling centre. The Hotwalls Studios are particularly worth a visit, with local artists displaying their work in these converted arches, as well as a fabulous cafe called The Canteen.

Continuing eastwards along the coast, walkers will encounter Southsea Castle, one of the most iconic landmarks in the area. Built by Henry VIII in the 16th century, this historic castle was designed to defend the Solent from naval attacks. The castle is open to the public, and visitors can explore its ramparts, take in stunning views of the Isle of Wight, and learn more about the area’s military history. The lighthouse at the castle adds a picturesque touch to this already fascinating location.

Pubs and Cafes Along the Way

One of the great joys of walking for pleasure in Southsea is the opportunity to stop at one of the town’s many cosy pubs or charming cafes. For those needing refreshment, Southsea has a wide range of spots to relax and recharge.

  • The Coffee Cup Southsea: Located right on the seafront, Coffee Cup is a popular choice for walkers looking to grab a coffee while enjoying water views. Its outdoor seating with a small play area makes it ideal for a sunny day, and there is some sheltered seating for less good weather. It is a great spot for staring at the sea or people-watching as you sip your hot drink.

  • The Briny: For those seeking something a bit more upscale, The Briny, located near South Parade Pier, offers fresh seafood and sophisticated dishes with a casual, beachside atmosphere.

  • Southsea Beach Cafe: Offers delicious brunches with sea views. This is a must-stop for a cosy brunch. Please check the website for opening times and menus.
